What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma symptoms depend on where the cancer develops in the body. Because the disease grows slowly and its earliest signs resemble far more common illnesses, symptoms are often mild at first and easy to overlook. Many people do not connect them to asbestos until decades after their exposure.

The two most common forms are pleural mesothelioma, which develops in the lining of the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma, which develops in the lining of the abdomen. The table below shows the symptoms most often reported for each.

Pleural mesothelioma (lungs)Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen)
Shortness of breathAbdominal swelling

Persistent dry coughNausea and appetite loss

Key facts about mesothelioma symptoms

  • Symptoms usually appear 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure.
  • Early signs are nonspecific and are often mistaken for pneumonia, the flu, or common digestive problems.
  • Symptoms tend to become more noticeable as the cancer progresses.
  • Sharing any known asbestos exposure with your doctor can lead to an earlier, more accurate diagnosis.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease and develops in the pleura, the thin lining that surrounds the lungs. Its symptoms are mainly respiratory and tend to worsen as fluid collects between the lung and the chest wall.

  • Shortness of breath, especially during activity
  • Chest pain or a feeling of tightness
  • A persistent, dry cough
  • Fatigue and general weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing or a hoarse voice in later stages

Why does pleural mesothelioma cause these symptoms?

As tumors grow along the pleura, they trigger inflammation and a buildup of fluid called a pleural effusion. That fluid presses on the lung and limits how fully it can expand, which is what produces breathlessness, chest pressure, and a lingering cough.

Illustration
How pleural fluid buildup limits the lung from expanding.
Dr. Jacques Fontaine, MD: "When a patient with an asbestos history has a pleural effusion that will not resolve, that is a reason to look further rather than treat it as a routine chest infection."

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma forms in the abdomen, so its early signs are often digestive rather than respiratory. They are easy to mistake for more common conditions, which is part of why it can take time to diagnose.

  • Abdominal swelling or bloating
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Nausea and loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in bowel habits

Why does peritoneal mesothelioma cause these symptoms?

Tumors in the peritoneum cause fluid to collect in the abdomen, a condition called ascites. The added pressure, along with the tumors themselves, leads to the swelling, discomfort, and digestive changes patients most often describe.

Pericardial mesothelioma symptoms

Pericardial mesothelioma is rare and develops in the lining around the heart. Because its symptoms overlap with many heart conditions, it is one of the most difficult forms to diagnose.

  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeat or palpitations
  • Shortness of breath, even at rest
  • Fatigue and night sweats
Dr. Wickii Vigneswaran, MD: "Pericardial cases are uncommon enough that a patient's asbestos history is often the detail that points the care team toward the right diagnosis."

Testicular mesothelioma symptoms

Testicular mesothelioma is the rarest form of the disease. It affects the lining of the testes and is most often found when a patient or doctor notices a change during an exam.

  • Pain or discomfort in the area

Managing mesothelioma symptoms

Even when symptoms are advanced, there are well-established ways to relieve them and improve day-to-day comfort. Symptom management, also called palliative care, can be used alongside treatments aimed at the cancer itself.

  • Draining excess fluid from the chest or abdomen to ease pressure and breathing
  • Pain management tailored to the type and location of discomfort
  • Oxygen therapy and breathing techniques for shortness of breath
  • Nutrition support to help maintain strength and weight
  • Counseling and support services for patients and caregivers

A mesothelioma specialist or palliative care team can build a plan around your specific symptoms and goals.

Common questions about mesothelioma symptoms

How long after asbestos exposure do symptoms appear?
Mesothelioma symptoms typically appear 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure. This long latency period is one reason a diagnosis can be delayed.
Can mesothelioma symptoms be mistaken for other conditions?
Yes. Early symptoms often resemble pneumonia, bronchitis, or common digestive issues, which is why sharing your exposure history with your doctor matters.
What are the early signs of mesothelioma?
The earliest signs are often mild and nonspecific, such as fatigue, a dry cough, or mild shortness of breath that gradually worsens over time.
How quickly do mesothelioma symptoms progress?
Progression varies from person to person. Symptoms often develop gradually over months and become more noticeable as the cancer advances through its stages.
Are mesothelioma symptoms painful?
Many patients experience chest or abdominal pain, but the type and intensity differ from person to person. Palliative care can relieve much of this discomfort at any stage.
What should I do if I have symptoms and a history of asbestos exposure?
Talk to a doctor and mention your asbestos exposure by name. You can also speak with one of our registered nurses to understand your options and find a specialist near you.
